SUV crashes into Hillcrest apartment building

An apartment building in Hillcrest was left without a staircase after a speeding SUV crashed into it on Thursday morning.

The incident took place close to the intersection of Walnut Avenue and First Avenue.

“It was completely smashed in the front,” Sylvia Vecchione told ABC 10 News. She is a nurse and ran to help after the heard the crash.

Police say the driver failed to stop at a stop sign and hit another vehicle before crashing into the apartment building.

Vecchione came to the rescue of the driver who was visibly shaken.

“I was looking to see if he had any cuts or bruises, but he didn't,” said Vecchione. 

The SUV driver and a passenger suffered only minor injuries and were taken to the local hospital say police.
