Vandal goes on windshield-smashing rampage in Hillcrest this afternoon

Thousands of dollars worth of damage done to cars parked on University Ave.

Many vehicles were damaged this afternoon when a vandal began smashing the windshields of parked cars at the 900 block of University Avenue in Hillcrest.

The suspect, Owen McHugh, a man police describe as being in his 30’s, approximately 5’10” with a thin build, was located immediately after officers arrived on the scene.

The San Diego Police Department told SDGLN that the incident happened around 12:27 pm, police responded to calls of a man with rocks damaging as many as six parked cars at the intersection of Tenth Avenue and University. 

The suspect was arrested and booked into Central Jail at approximately 2:30 pm.

He was charged with felony vandalism.

Officer Mark Herring at the SDPD was not able to confirm the state of the suspects residency or if he was under the influence of any substance. 

Officer Herring said no injuries were reported.
